Symbol of Torment by timjo Symbol of Torment by timjo
A pendant shaped as The symbol of Torment, from the computer game Planescape: Torment.

Carved out of 2mm silver plate with saw, files and engraving drill.

Note: The symbol, as other artwork from the game are owned by Interplay, and thus I can't make them for sale.

Even though I already have a tattoo of the rune - also lacking the spirit as your piece of jewelry is - I still want this pendant. Do you have any guidelines as to how I could make one myself? I am pretty experienced with making cast jewelry, so a few guidelines would be awesome. But of course I don't expect you to have kept the recipe since it's been quite a while since you did it ;)

Well, I didn't cast it but instead it's simply a silver plate sawed and filed into form. I started with 2 mm thick plate and printed a picture of the symbol, then glued it to the silver and drilled appropriate holes for the sawblade. After that it's just sawing and filing and polishing. (Plus soldering the ring for hanging it.)

Actually, getting paid for time spent is other words for making profit off my time and effort, so I'm afraid I still can't make you one, sorry :)

The distance between the sharp tips is 25mm, so it's quite a small indeed.

I wonder if the copyright issue is really that strict; there are certainly fanworks being bought and sold regularly, and as far as I know, companies generally don't care.

Not that I'm telling you what to do, although I probably would have bought one, myself. I keep thinking I'll get this tattooed on my arm one day, but the threshold for that is rather higher.

I don't know about Interplay, but as far as I know, for example LucasArts controls strictly Star Wars fan art and prosecutes anyone trying to sell it for profit without proper licensing... And personally, I don't want to go there.

hey, maybe you could make a sort of tutorial on how to create one? that way no copyright is broken.. :-s

Maybe, altough it requires a bit of tools and equipment (like torch for soldering the ring where it hangs from) so few people could make one anyway, even if they were willing. Unless of course you have access to the tools needed.

you should do it although not a lot of people would be able to make it. it would make a great chance for people to learn from you. in my case, yeah, i do have the tools..and would love to learn how to make something cool like this with them. and i'm sure there's a lot of people who would do the same.

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been too active in dA lately...

But yeah, I could make one. It's only that I might be too lazy to do it. I have long had plans to make lost wax casting tutorial, even have the photographs taken for it, but I had forgotten the whole project...

Well damn, you've got the supply AND the demand, but nothing can be worked out with the rights? That's just not right. :(

I think it would take me a long time to aquire the funds to get the stuff and *learn* to make something like this, and as for it coming out so well... Ha!

I'm curious if you've tried to follow this through to sale despite the problems, but I'm afraid to hear the answer.

In any case, I envy your creativity, craftsmanship, and devotion to P:T. :)

Thanks a lot :)

It's not really so hard to learn to make these, only you need some basic tools to get started... There are many beginner tutorials online which would guide you if you're interested. Of course the more advanced stuff (like casting) requires more advanced equipment.

I might some day make something similar to this piece, only that it's my own desing and thus my copyright.

It's a bit of a pity yes... but then, it's not that hard to make and doesn't require any special tools so practically anyone can make themselves one :)

That's awesome! Planescpae Torment is a wonderful game. I wonder what a pendant would look like if you based it off of the Lady of Pain. You did a fabulous job on this by the way.

Well, the shape with all other art from the game belong to Interplay (I think) so I can't make them for sale, only for myself of as a gift... But as far as I know, it was my idea to turn it into jewellery piece. And it's not my place to mind if you make one for yourself, so feel free :)
